Before I start with the writing part, I must admit that writing about Private Investigations and what exactly is the task of a private investigator, becomes a daunting task if this is your field of proficiency, as whatever you say would lay a significant impact on the mindset of readers.
Now, to begin with a brief but crucial history of private investigations, the first known private investigation firm was established in the year 1833, by a lawbreaker, combatant, and criminal privateer- Eugène François Vidocq. He named it ‘Le Bureau Des Renseignments’ which means ‘Office of Intelligence’. During that period, most of the people associated to that organization were criminals too. This firm dealt in keeping records and ballistics. Vidocq also introduced criminology to it. Later in the year 1850, Allen Pinkerton established the first detective agency in United States, and from there this field was born which then slowly started globalizing.
Infact in United States, private investigations is quite flourishing industry. If truth be told, US has more private detective firms than anywhere else in the world. The private investigators associated to these firms mostly specialize within certain industries. Some have proficiency in criminal cases, some in civil cases, while some deal in computer forensics and due diligence. These specializations can better be classified into the following four categories namely, Criminal Investigations, Corporate Investigations, Insurance Fraud Investigations, and last but not least Civil Investigations.
Had one been interested in Criminal Investigations, it would be dealing with homicide, shoplifting, sex crimes, and racketeering. For the ones with their keen interest in Corporate Investigations, would have been dealing with security issues related to profiling, and white collar crimes. Where on one hand, insurance-fraud investigators work on cases involving workers’ compensation and liability accidents; civil investigations involve cases like divorce, child custody and recovery statements and are often referred to be the bread and butter of this industry.
A usual day for a private investigator can be the most unusual, captivating and mind-boggling, or it can prove to be the threshold of digest and boredom. Private detectives or private investigators are appointed to locate missing people or debtors, serve people, or protect them, or sometimes…just to carry out surveillance. No matter if the day is fascinating, boring or full of hardships; investigation is a field that calls for a great stamina to travel.
So, if somebody now asks you about the formula for making a private investigator. Tell them – It’s quite simple. To some sense of adventure, add Sherlock Holmes’ sharp thinking; mix in a little bit of espionage and then some lure.
